SkinPro - Self-care for you and your staff over the busy season - December 2023

As we head into our busiest season, it becomes even more important to prioritise self care for you and your staff. It is a tricky paradox, because the busier you are, the more important it is to take time out for yourself. When your schedule is packed, you probably feel you don’t “have” time to look after yourself, but that is exactly when you need to prioritise yourself and “make” the time. You’ve no doubt heard the saying, “You can't pour from an empty cup” Essentially, the saying means that in order for us as humans to effectively take care of others, we must first take care of ourselves. The notion is intuitive in nature, but can be frustratingly difficult to put into practice.

Along with looking after yourself, there are also some for your staff during December, we asked Nikki Diack what she does for her staff at Nude Skin and Beauty:
"I take good care of my staff and make sure they have paid breaks in the schedule ahead of getting booked up I also invest in Vitamin C, we all take this everyday and it’s a bit of fun this year, I have brought Poten-C Superdose Vitamin C. This will be a great investment as we really can’t afford our staff to get sick at this time of the year it also helps with their energy. The week of Xmas I also make them smoothies with healthy fruits."

Here are ten ways you can incorporate some self-care practices into your busy schedule:

  1. Take mini breaks: Schedule short breaks throughout the day to recharge. Use this time for deep breathing exercises and/or stretching. Giving your brain a break throughout the day helps maintain focus and increase resilience. While there's no hard-and-fast prescription, try aiming for a short rest period about every 90 minutes.
  1. Practice mindfulness: Incorporate mindfulness techniques into your daily routine, even if it's for a few minutes. Engage in activities like meditation, guided visualisation, or mindful eating to promote relaxation and focus.
  1. Prioritise quality of sleep: Make sleep a priority, as it significantly impacts your overall well-being. Establish a consistent sleep schedule and create a relaxing bedtime routine to ensure you get enough deep restorative sleep.
  1. Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of water throughout the day to keep your body and mind refreshed. Proper hydration improves focus, energy levels, and overall health. You may need to consider adding some electrolytes to your water and don’t forget – your EFAs intake also contributes to balance of oil & water in body.
  1. Optimise nutrition: Make healthy food choices, even when you're busy. Plan and prepare simple, nutritious meals and snacks in advance to avoid relying on fast food or unhealthy options. Be mindful when you are eating – awareness is metabolism!
  1. Move your body: Incorporate some physical activity into your routine, if the gym isn’t your thing, consider a hike, swim or even a short walk. Remember, it doesn’t have to be a one-hour drive to and from the gym or biking trail for a one-hour workout vs. collapsing on the couch. One more step is better than none, and three squats are better than no squats.’ Do what you can, three minutes of dancing with your favourite music still counts, any physical exercise boosts mood, reduces stress, and improves overall well-being.
  1. Stay connected with loved ones: Nurture your relationships by scheduling quality time with family and friends. Engage in meaningful conversations or activities that help you unwind and feel supported.
  1. Unplug from technology: Take regular breaks from screens and social media to reduce stress and promote mental clarity. Set designated technology-free periods to focus on self-care and disconnect from the digital world.
  1. Practice gratitude: Take a moment each day to reflect on things you are grateful for. Cultivating gratitude can shift your perspective, boost positivity, and enhance overall well-being.
  1. Engage in hobbies: Make time for activities you enjoy, whether it's reading, painting, playing an instrument, or any other hobby that brings you joy and relaxation.

Remember, self-care doesn't have to be time-consuming or elaborate. Even small, consistent actions can have a significant impact on your well-being. Prioritise self-care as an essential part of your busy schedule to maintain balance and reduce stress. Your mind and body will thank you.
